Boston, MA - Doug Weight scored the game-winning goal in the shootout to help the Carolina Hurricanes edge the Boston Bruins, 4-3, in their second meeting of the season on Sunday afternoon at the TD Banknorth Garden. Brad Stuart tied the game with 2:05 remaining in regulation to force overtime. Brad Boyes and David Tanabe also scored for Boston, while Tim Thomas continued his superb play with 40 saves in net.

"Obviously, we would like two points, but it was a hard fought point that we got," said Head Coach Mike Sullivan. "We played a good team and our players really battled. I thought our players really battled, especially in the third period. We were real competitive in the third. They had to really dig down to find the energy and we certainly did."

Mid-way through the first period, David Tanabe scored on a slapper from the point to put the Bruins up 1-0. Andrew Alberts passed the puck up to Tanabe from the half boards and Tanabe blasted a shot through Hurricanes goalie Martin Gerber's legs for his second goal of the season.

"That goal was a product of our system," said Tanabe. "Andrew Alberts did a good job of pinching down the wall and our pressure caused that turnover, and I was fortunate to get it where I did. My job isn't to score goals, but to move the puck well. I was able to score a goal tonight and it felt good."

Carolina pulled even at 11:43 of the second period on a Glen Wesley rebound from inside the left face-off circle. Chad Larose took a shot from down low that Tim Thomas saved, but Wesley came in from the blueline and knocked in the rebound for his second of the year.

Brad Boyes put the Bruins back up by a goal on the power play at 14:29 of the second period. Glen Murray made a pass to Boyes who beat Gerber far glove side for his 16th of the season.

Less than a minute after Boyes' goal, Carolina forward Erik Cole backhanded a shot that beat Thomas five-hole to knot the score at two apiece.

The Hurricanes picked up their first lead of the game at 3:23 of the third period. Eric Staal scored his 34th of the year on a snap shot that beat Thomas glove side to put the ‘Canes up 3-2. Cory Stillman and Aaron Ward picked up the assists.

With just 2:05 left to play, P.J. Axelsson passed the puck to the point where Brad Stuart ripped a slap shot past Gerber to send the game into overtime.

"It was a good play by Milan to keep it in the zone and (Axelsson) put it into some open area," said Stuart. "I had about five or six shots blocked earlier so I was trying to get one. Wayne (Primeau) was standing right there in front, so it was good work by the other guys to help get that goal."

In overtime, Carolina dominated play, but Thomas weathered the storm and made seven saves to send the game to a shootout.

In the shootout, Gerber turned away Patrice Bergeron and Glen Murray, but Brad Boyes scored to force another round. Doug Weight scored the game-winning goal when he beat Thomas five-hole and Gerber ended it in the forth round after he stuffed Sergei Samsonov's bid.

"Today's (shootout loss) felt worse than some of the other ones," said Thomas. "Maybe because we didn't come away with a point yesterday even though we played so well. Then today we battled back and got a point and we wanted to get rewarded for hard work over two games. We didn't get the two-point reward. We got the one-point reward."

The Bruins will travel to Pittsburgh next to take on the Penguins on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. (NESN).
