Boston Bruins Academy Wine Tasting

The Boston Bruins Academy held their first class of the New Year on Tuesday, January 17, a Wine Tasting at Morton’s, The Steakhouse on Boylston Street. Guests indulged themselves in Morton’s specialty appetizers, fine wines from Ruby Wines, and mingled with Bruins players’ P.J. Axelsson, Hal Gill, Andrew Raycroft, Jiri Slegr, and Brad Stuart.

“It was a great time,” said defenseman Hal Gill. “If you’re going to do a charity, wine tasting is a great way to do it. You try some new wines and hang out with some people that donated money to a charity. I think it’s a real good thing. It’s always nice to meet fans, especially in a nice intimate setting like Morton’s. I had a great time and I went and grabbed a bite to eat after. They have those little sandwiches, which are excellent.

“I enjoy a glass or two of wine for dinner, but I’m more of a cheap wine drinker. I’m not into the crazy expensive bottles, but I like good wine when I can have some. There was a Pinot Noir that was pretty good, one from Spain, and a South African White Wine that was pretty good too.”

The cost for the evening was $80 per person for non-season ticket holders. That price covered admission to the event, a Boston Bruins Wine Stopper, and a ticket to a Bruins home game. Season ticket holders had the opportunity to buy a ticket at a discounted price of $40, which excluded the Bruins ticket. All proceeds benefited the Boston Bruins Foundation.

Ruby Wines, represented by Kyle Harsha and TJ Douglas, brought four wines for guests to sip and taste. The two gentlemen were there to provide the samples and information on the four wines present.

Those wines were a 2004 Ken Forrester Chenin Blanc, a white wine from a restaurateur turned wine maker, based out of Stellenbosch, South Africa; a 2002 Calera Central Coast Pinot Noir, which has grapes sourced from several vineyards in Central California; a 1995 Faustino "I" Gran Reserva, which is made from the tempranillo grape. The wine is aged a minimum of five years before its release with at least two of those years in oak; a 2000 J Lohr Hilltop Cabernet, which is the "top rung" cabernet from a producer in Paso Robles, California. Although the vintage was fairly bad for California, the wine turned out quite to be tasteful.

Brad Stuart had a great opportunity to chat with some fans on a personal level. Coming to the Bruins in a mid-season trade, Stuart has not had many chances to meet fans and talk to them, so the Wine Tasting was an excellent opportunity to do just that.

“It was a good way to get out and meet some people and raise some money at the same time,” he said. “It was an interesting concept instead of the basic sit down and sign autograph session. It’s a good way to get us involved in the community and make it fun for everybody. People like the opportunity to actually meet you and talk to you a little bit, rather than just get the autograph and go. I liked how we can mingle and try some wines at the same time. I love wine. The cabernet was probably my favorite. I really enjoyed myself.”

For the Boston Bruins Academy’s next event, come see members of the Boston Bruins as they serve drinks at The Sports Grille - Boston on Tuesday, January 31 from 6-8 p.m. The Sports Grille - Boston is located on Canal Street across the street from the TD Banknorth Garden.
