Bergeron lifts B’s past Ducks
By Jeremy Lemoine

Boston - Patrice Bergeron and Marco Sturm teamed up for three of Boston's four goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to beat the Anaheim Mighty Ducks 4-3 at the TD Banknorth Garden on Monday afternoon. Bergeron set up Sturm for two goals, while Sturm assisted on Bergeron's game-winner just 1:55 into overtime. Sergei Samsonov scored the other goal for the Bruins and Tim Thomas made 25 saves for his first win of the season.

"Those two (Bergeron & Sturm) really play well together and the more they play together, I think they get a little more comfortable," said Head Coach Mike Sullivan. "They're starting to learn each other's tendencies. I think Bergeron is a guy that can really find people. He sees the ice well and Marco has great outside speed and a knack for getting to the net. With that, Patrice can get him the puck. They have assets that really compliment each other."

Midway through the first period, Patrice Bergeron connected with Marco Sturm for a 1-0 lead. P.J. Axelsson tipped the puck out of the Boston zone to Bergeron while he raced up ice. Bergeron made a quick pass across the crease and Sturm redirected it past Mighty Ducks netminder Ilya Bryzgalov for his 14th of the season.

The Bruins jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Sergei Samsonov's 16th of the year. At 15:35, Samsonov banged home a Milan Jurcina rebound from in front of the net with a backhand. Travis Green picked up the other assist.

Just over a minute into the second period, Anaheim cut the Boston lead to one. Ducks forward Andy McDonald made a drop pass for Scott Niedermayer. Niedermayer beat Tim Thomas with a slap shot from the top of the right circle for his sixth of the season.

At 3:50 of the third period, Marco Sturm scored his second goal of night. Patrice Bergeron beat an Anaheim defender and slid the puck over to Sturm in front of the net while falling to his knees. Sturm reached for the puck and tipped it top shelf for the 3-1 Bruins lead.

"Patrice is a great guy to play with and he's a great player," said Sturm. "I was expecting that pass on the first goal. The second one I wasn't sure because of the nice move he made, but he got it to me. Since I've been here, we've played well together and it's a lot of fun playing with him. He's a simple centerman and that's good for a winger like myself. He can do it all and he shows it."

At 9:19 of the third period, Mighty Ducks forward Chris Kunitz scored on a wrist shot that beat Thomas to the far side and cut the Boston lead to 3-2. Jonathan Hedstrom stole the puck in the Bruins zone and passed it over to Kunitz for the quick score.

Just 14 seconds later, Bergeron was called for a hooking penalty. Samsonov was also penalized for an illegal stick, giving Anaheim a two-man advantage for a full two minutes.

The Ducks tied it 44 seconds into the ensuing power play on a goal by Ryan Getzlaf. Getzlaf scored high stick side on Thomas from a pass by Scott Niedermayer at 10:17. The goal forced the two teams into overtime.

In overtime, Patrice Bergeron beat Ilya Bryzgalov with a high wrist shot for the game winner at 1:55. With Marco Sturm racing to the net, Bergeron elected to shoot instead of pass and beat Bryzgalov with his fourth game winning goal of the season and 13th goal on the year.

"Tonight was an important one, so it's a huge win," said Bergeron. "I think Sturm and I had four two-on-ones, which I don't mind. We have good chemistry and he's a great player. Everybody knows he's going to put the puck in the net if he has the chance. The first game against Ottawa, when he came, we clicked right away. He has great speed and loves to forecheck, which I love, so it's great to play with him."

The Bruins will head to Philadelphia next to take on the Flyers on Thursday night at the Wachovia Center. Game time is 7:00 p.m. (NESN).
