Bruins blow away Leafs, 5-1
By Jeremy Lemoine

Toronto, ONT - The Boston Bruins snapped a six-game losing streak, beating the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday night by a score of 5-1 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. Glen Murray scored two power play goals and Andrew Raycroft made 20 saves for the Bruins, who evened their season series with the Maple Leafs at two games apiece. The Bruins received balanced contributions throughout the lineup, as Patrice Bergeron, Shawn McEachern, and Sergei Samsonov each added goals in the victory.

"I thought our guys played a hard game," said Head Coach Mike Sullivan. "They played a smart game, and we got rewarded early for their effort which hasn't always been the case this year. It was a solid effort and it's something we can build on. It's nice when you get up early in a game like that, but there's a lot of hockey to be played and that presents a challenge in and of itself. I really thought our guys played a solid 60 minutes of hockey tonight."

Boston came out with something to prove in the first period. With quick pressure put on in the Toronto end, Glen Murray scored a power play goal on a one-handed shot in front of the net at 3:03 for his 11th of the season and a 1-0 Bruins lead.

The Bruins took a 2-0 lead on another power play goal in the first. Joe Thornton took a slap shot from the right inside circle. Toronto's Ed Belfour made the initial save, but Alexei Zhamnov picked up the rebound and passed it out front where Glen Murray one-timed the puck to the back of the net for his second goal of the night.

"We got a great start tonight and we did a great job in our end," said forward Alexei Zhamnov. "We were disciplined tonight and those two power play goals in the first period were important. Everybody had a tremendous night today too."

In the second period, the Bruins blew the game wide open, scoring two goals in a 1:47 span.

With Andrew Raycroft making some big saves at the other end of the ice, Patrice Bergeron put the B's up 3-0 with his sixth goal of the season at 4:21 of the second period. Belfour misplayed the puck and the entire forward line of Bergeron, Axelsson, and Green were there to jump on the broken play.

Just 1:47 later, Shawn McEachern took the puck down the right side of the offensive zone and beat Belfour top-corner for a 4-0 lead. The goal was McEachern's second of the year.

Later in the period, Andrew Raycroft was put to the test with Toronto pressing, but Rayzor was up to the task, turning away all of the 12 shots he faced through two periods of play. Boston continued their pressure from the first period, forcing Belfour to make 31 saves through the first 40 minutes.

At 2:39 of the third period, Toronto's Darcy Tucker got Toronto on the board to cut the lead to 4-1. Matt Stajan made a pass to Tucker through his legs, and Tucker quickly wristed it short-side past Raycroft for the goal.

The Bruins responded though, getting a goal from Sergei Samsonov at 11:57 for the 5-1 lead. Zhamnov forced a turnover in the neutral zone and quickly fed the puck to a streaking Samsonov. Samsonov took the puck, passed it over to Brad Boyes and Boyes gave it back to Samsonov who banged it home for his 10th goal of the season.

The Bruins next play the Philadelphia Flyers at the TD Banknorth Garden this Friday in a 12:00 p.m. matinee game. The Bruins will look to make it two-in-a-row and even up their season series with the Flyers.
