Bruins fall to Flyers in OT, 4-3
Philadelphia, PA - Joe Thornton had a goal and an assist and Hannu Toivonen made 32 saves, but Boston couldn't hold on in overtime, losing to the Philadelphia Flyers Tuesday night, 4-3. Shawn McEachern and Sergei Samsonov scored the other goals for the Bruins, who lost in dramatic fashion after giving up a two-goal lead with just 3:35 remaining in the third period. The goal was McEachern's first of the year and Samsonov extended his point streak to seven games with his team-leading eighth goal.

Both teams traded two goals apiece in the third, sending the game to overtime where Flyers defenseman Joni Pitkanen scored his second goal of the night for the winner.

With just 3:35 left, Simon Gagne slipped through two defenders in the slot and beat Toivonen through the legs to cut the Bruins lead to 3-2.

Then with 0:23 ticks left on the clock and an extra attacker on the ice for the Flyers, Pitkanen received a home-run pass from Peter Forsberg and scored the equalizer, wristing a shot to the far side of the net and sending the game to overtime.

The Bruins opened the scoring in the third period on a power play goal from Sergei Samsonov just 0:56 seconds in. Crashing the net, Samsonov received a pass from Thornton and one-timed the puck into the net, giving Boston a 2-1 lead.

At 15:12, Joe Thornton added what appeared to be an insurance goal, stealing the puck from Pitkanen along the boards and taking the puck in alone on Flyers goalie Robert Esche. He put a nifty move on the net minder, followed his own rebound and stuffed it home from behind the net for a 3-1 lead, his seventh goal of the year.

After one period of play, the Flyers led the Bruins by a score of 1-0. With under a minute left to play in the period, former Bruin Mike Knuble tipped home a shot from the point on the power play.

The second was much of the first, but with Boston scoring late in the period this time. Shawn McEachern scored at 18:22 on a slap shot from the point on the power play for his first of the year. Jiri Slegr and Dave Scatchard were credited with the assists.
