Bruins freeze Penguins. 6-3
By Jeremy Lemoine

Boston, MA - The Boston Bruins scored four power play goals en route to a 6-3 win over the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night before a sellout crowd at the TD Banknorth Garden. Joe Thornton, Jiri Slegr, and Patrice Bergeron each had three points apiece, and Hannu Toivonen made 26 saves in a dominating performance, leading the Bruins to their second consecutive win.

"Its never a bad play to put the puck at the net, especially on the power play when we shoot the puck. It creates so much," said a happy Coach Sullivan. "Nothing breaks down coverage like a shot on goal."

Nick Boynton set the tone early for the B's, scoring just 28 seconds into the period on a knuckling shot from the blue line for his third of the season. On the two-man advantage, the Bruins were able to net two goals and take a 3-0 lead.

Jiri Slegr took a pass from Glen Murray and one-timed it home for his third of the season at 10:05. Just 35 seconds later, Slegr got his second goal of the game on an identical play, this time taking a pass from Sergei Samsonov.

"It was about the special teams tonight," said Slegr. "We had great penalty killing and scored some good goals on the power play. If you do that in this league these days, it works."

With just over three minutes left in the first, Mark Recchi scored on a rebound to cut the Bruins lead to 3-1.

Boston came out storming in the second period, scoring two more goals for a 5-1 lead.

Joe Thornton started the scoring with his fifth of the season at 7:29. Sebastien Caron was left out of the net, trying to play a dump in by Glen Murray that took a bad bounce off the glass directly to Thornton.

About two minutes later, Patrice Bergeron took the puck end-to-end on a power play, putting a stifling move on a Penguins defenseman and chipping it over Caron's shoulder for his fourth of the season. The goal forced the Pens to change goalies, exiting Sebastien Caron and entering Jocelyn Thibault.

"We had a great power play tonight. When you shoot, it opens the play, and I think (Slegr) opened the play twice. It made them back off and helped us be able to shoot more," said Bergeron.

In the third, Joe Thornton scored his second goal of the night on a shot from the right side of the net, trickling through Jocelyn Thibault's legs at 7:31. The goal, on the power play, gave the Bruins a 6-1 lead. Pittsburgh made it 6-2 on a goal by Lasse Pirjeta at 13:29 on a pass from Mario Lemiuex, and Mark Recchi added another for the Pens, picking up a loose puck and putting it over Toivonen's shoulder at 19:57, making it 6-3.

"We had our chances five-on-three. We capitalized tonight and that was the same story line against them here last time," said the Captain. "You get those opportunities but they're useless if you don't score on them. We did that and took the game over from there. Our power play was strong tonight."

The Bruins take their two-game winning streak into Philadelphia on Tuesday against a strong Flyers squad. Face-off is set for 7:00 p.m. (OLN).
