Bruins Alumni vs. Russia’s Gazpromexport All-Stars
By Jeremy Lemoine

On the afternoon of Saturday, October 29, the Boston Bruins Alumni took to the ice to play host to Russia’s Gazpromexport All-Star team. The game was played to benefit the Boston Bruins Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit foundation dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for children in our community. Although the Bruins Alumni lost the game, everyone was a winner on the day.

It was a competitive game as both teams fought hard for the two 25-minute halves. With 4:00 minutes remaining, the game was knotted at 5-5, but Gazpromexport scored two quick goals to give them a 7-5 lead. Then, with a minute left, Bob Beers netted a goal for the Alumni, cutting the lead to one, but it wasn’t quite enough as the Bruins Alumni team fell to Russia’s Gazpromexport’s touring All-Stars, 7-6.

“It was a very competitive game for us,” said Bruins Alumni President Bob Sweeney. “We’re not used to games like that, they still have some very talented players. It was a good game, good effort, good fun, and a good sweat. Any time you play you want to win the game, but I think it was a win-win situation for everybody today.”

Ray Bourque was also in the lineup Saturday afternoon. As always, Bourque played well, quarterbacking play from the blue line. Although he hasn’t skated much recently, he hasn’t lost a step since he retired in 2001.

“Alumni games are somewhat competitive, but not as much as today,” said Bourque. “I skated twice this week but it’s the only time I have skated since the spring.”

Other Bruins alumni who played were Bob Sweeney, Ray Bourque, Lyndon Byers, Bob Beers, Don Sweeney, Steve Leach, Nevin Markwart, Ken Hodge, Ken Linesman, Reggie Lemelin, Billy O’Dwyer, Andy Brickley, Chris Nilan, Tim Sweeney, Don Marcotte, Rick Middleton, and Cleon Daskalakis. Bruins legend Milt Schmidt was behind the bench as coach.

Former NHL referee Paul Stewart, who is President of the Boston Bruins Foundation, was head referee for the game.
