Daily Scoop (09\/15\/05)
Boston, Mass. – With the first official exhibition game just a day away, the B’s training camp continued today at the TD Banknorth Garden as Team A took on Team C.

Team A dominated the first 20 minutes of the scrimmage as Joe Thornton and PJ Axelsson combined to create numerous chances, but were unable to get past rookie goaltender Jordan Sigalet.

The game was scoreless until Zdenek Blatny broke the deadlock at 29:03 putting Team C up 1-0, giving them a lead they would never relinquish. Dave Scatchard tipped home a pass from Nathan Robinson three minutes later to make it 2-0, and Patrice Bergeron and Petr Kalus added goals to account for the 4–0 final.

Team C improved to 2-0, while Team A (0-2) is still looking for its first win of training camp. Idle Team B remains 1-1.

Bergeron solid in win

After a solid rookie campaign in 2003-04 and a stellar season with Providence last year, Patrice Bergeron looks like he’s picked up right where he left off. He took a feed from D Jay Leach in the slot and banged it past G Mike Ayers with 11 minutes left in today’s scrimmage.

“He just continues to improve as he grows and matures,” said Coach Sullivan. “We have high expectations of the kid because of what he’s been able to accomplish in such a short period of time.”

Leach & Leetch

Team C had a broadcaster’s worst nightmare as one of their defensive pairings, with rookie blueliner Jay Leach paired with one of the NHL’s all-time best in Brian Leetch. Leach, who is fighting for a spot on the big club, looks at the chance to play with a living legend as both a thrill and an opportunity.

“I grew up watching Brian, saw him win the Cup, so to play with a guy like that is phenomenal,” said Leach. “He’s one of the top five defenseman of all time, so if I can learn anything from him it’s a blessing.”

The New NHL

If training camp scrimmages are any indication, the new rules implemented by the NHL this season will have a noticeable impact on games. There is much less clutching and grabbing in the neutral zone and fast two-way action is the norm. The lack of the two-line offside opens up the ice, and the creativity of the skilled players is very evident. The B’s struggled at times to put cohesive passes together, with players still getting used to one another early in camp, but as the exhibition season progresses the potential for high-scoring, attractive hockey is high. But don’t expect to see a lack of hockey’s physical side…Cody McLeod and Jeremy Reich squared off seven minutes before the end of the game, each landing a couple of good shots before the bout was stopped to thunderous applause from both benches.
