Daily Scoop (09\/13\/05)

Boston, Mass. – After a day of testing and examinations yesterday, the full roster was back to work today at the TD Banknorth Garden for the first true day of camp.

The roster was split into three teams for the day; Teams A, B, and C. Each team practiced with Coach Mike Sullivan, with Team A taking the ice first at 9:00 a.m., followed by Team B at 11:10 a.m., and Team C at 12:40 p.m.

Team B wins the first scrimmage of training camp

At 10:00 a.m., Team A (wearing white) scrimmaged Team B (wearing black) for a 45-minute period, played in running time.

Hannu Toivonen, who last year finished the season with Providence ranked in the top ten of every AHL goaltending category, got the start in net for the Team B. Jordan Sigalet, Boston’s sixth pick in the 2001 Draft, was in net for Team A.

Team A touted a top line of Shawn McEachern, Joe Thornton, and Tom Fitzgerald, countered by Brad Isbister, Alex Zhamnov, and David Krejci for Team B.

Martin Samuelsson got Team B on the board first with a goal at 9:00 of the period. It didn’t take long for Team B to get back on the board, as Ben Walter scored off a rebound just 1:10 later, putting them up 2-0.

Milan Gajic cut Team A's deficit to 2-1 with a nifty goal, going high, glove side at 18:45.

Halfway through the period, both goaltenders were replaced. Mike Brown came in for Team A and Mike Ayers for Team B. The teams played scoreless hockey for the remainder of the game, giving Team B the first training camp scrimmage victory, 2-1.

Sullivan likes what he sees

Coach Mike Sullivan led the team practices today and was pleased with the overall effort on the ice.

“I thought it was a good first day,” said Sullivan. "There was good effort out there and there was enthusiasm. I think the players were excited to get back at it. We’re making steps in the right direction already.”

Early in the camp, it’s back to the basics, and that includes getting the players into peak skating form.

“Conditioning is certainly a priority at this point,” Sullivan noted. "There’s a fine line between conditioning and over conditioning to the point where we have a rash of injuries. As a coaching staff we’re going to try to monitor that closely with the medical staff and make sure we push the guys.”
