Daily Scoop (09\/11\/05)
Wilmington, Mass. – The Black team won its first game on Sunday at Ristuccia Arena, 8-6, putting the final punctuation on the last day of rookie camp.

Early in the game, it looked like it would be much of the same, with the White team carrying the play early and skating to a 4-2 lead after the first period.

The White team picked up right where they left off, getting a goal from Wacey Rabbit eight minutes into the period. After that, however, the Black team took control of the game, scoring five unanswered goals and taking a 7-5 lead. Anton Hedman would cut the lead to 7-6, but Petr Kalus scored an empty net goal to seal the 8-6 victory for the Black team. The goal was Kalus’ second of the game.

Coach Sullivan speaks

After the game, Coach Mike Sullivan talked about the importance of rookie camp and what he expects from his players.

“This is a great opportunity for the younger players to get in and get their feet wet and familiarize themselves with the Bruins organization,” said Sullivan. “But the real test will come when the big camp opens.”

Sullivan noted that a solid training camp wouldn’t go unnoticed.

“There are always spots to be won. Nothing is ever etched in stone,” he said. “One thing about professional sports is you to have to earn your keep every day. The players that have been in the league a long time understand that, and that’s why they’ve been in the league a long time.

“We encourage our guys to do what they do best. But it has to be with a purpose and it has to be about advancing the objectives of the team. We want to field teams both in Boston and Providence that are disciplined teams and they understand what we’re trying to accomplish as a group. That goes first and foremost above and beyond any individual objectives.”
