Wilmington, Mass. – With the first day of rookie camp in the books, the players were back at it again on Friday morning, descending on Ristuccia Arena for the second full day. Both teams practiced for one hour in drills directed by Providence Coach Scott Gordon. The White team was first to hit the ice at 9:00 a.m., followed by the Black team skating at 11:45 a.m. In between the two practices was the Black vs. White scrimmage at 10:00 a.m., played in two 30-minute periods.
Mike Ayers from Hingham, MA, started the scrimmage in net for the Black team, while Jordan Sigalet, Boston’s sixth pick in the 2001 Draft, got the call for the White team. The first period was tightly contested, with both goalies keeping their respective teams in the game early. The only goal of the period came at the 14:00 minute mark on a shot from the point by Michael Korenko.
Scott Misfud got the Black team on the board five minutes into the second period to tie the game at 1. The tie wouldn’t last long though, as Kris Versteeg of the White team put the finishing touches on a Cody McLeod feed just two minutes later. Nate Thompson sealed the victory for the White team with a penalty shot at the 18:00 minute mark. The final score was the White team, 3-1.
Other notes
After the scrimmage, the two teams skated 4-on-4 for 10 minutes with no scoring.
The day’s highlight was the penalty shot drill, with seven players skating for each side. Just three out of the 14 skaters scored during the drill: Milan Gajic for the Black team; Kris Versteeg and Anton Hedman for the White team.
For the second consecutive day, Cody McLeod dropped the gloves, this time against Guillaume Lepine after a skirmish behind the net.
