Army National Guard Staff Sergeant and Boston Police officer, Andrew Fay will return to Iraq about the same time his fellow soldiers will receive a few special gifts from home.
While stationed in Baghdad, Fay and some of his fellow soldiers created a street hockey league using whatever equipment they could find, including broken sticks and goalie pads made from mattresses and cardboard. After receiving word that the league was in desperate need of new equipment, the City of Boston jumped at the chance.
The Boston Bruins Foundation teamed up with Mayor Menino, Boston Police Activites League, Franklin Sports of Stoughton and UPS to provide Fay with everything from sticks and goals, to shirts and masks. UPS has offered to ship the equipment overseas free of charge.
Mayor of Boston Thomas M. Menino, Boston Bruins Foundation President Charlie Jacobs, UPS Public Affairs Manager Neal Rossi, Boston Police Superintendent Paul Joyce, Boston Police Activities League Executive Director Elliot Feldman and representatives of Massachusetts Army National Guard all gathered at the TD Banknorth Garden to present Fay and his family with the hockey equipment.
