Bruins Fall to Islanders in OT, 2-1

Moncton, NB – Despite 36 saves by goaltender Tuukka Rask, the Boston Bruins fell to the New York Islanders, 2-1, in overtime in a game held in front of 3278 fans at the Moncton Coliseum.
The Islanders Trevor Smith snuck through the Bruins defense and roofed a shot on Rask to give the Islanders the victory at 2:03 of the extra session. Jon Sim scored New York’s first goal and Dennis Wideman scored for Boston in the loss.
Driving from their own home-away-from home, Halifax, Nova Scotia, the Black & Gold visited the Islanders training base in Moncton, New Brunswick for their second exhibition game in as many nights.
A nondescript first period was followed by a back-and-forth second stanza, which featured the goals by Boston’s Wideman (8:01) and New York’s Sim (9:17) and knotted the game at 1-1.
However, it was Rask, the B’s young goalie, who garnered most of the attention on the evening.
After making 13 saves in the first, Rask made another 13 in the second to have 26 going into the second break.
Rask added ten more stops in the third period and overtime until Smith ended the contest with an outstanding individual effort.
Boston fell to 1-1-0 on the preseason, while New York is 1-0-0.
The Bruins next play in Halifax versus the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night after practicing in Cole Harbour on Wednesday.
