P-Bruins Defeat Monarchs 3-2 in OT

Win Division Semi-Finals 4 Games To 0

Monday, 04.21.2008 / 10:19 PM / News
Manchester, NH - The Providence Bruins defeated the Manchester Monarchs 3-2 in overtime Monday evening at the Verizon Wireless Arena.  The P-Bruins got their goals from Pascal Pelletier, Jeff Hoggan and Martins Karsums.  With the victory the P-Bruins have won the best-of-seven Atlantic Division Semi-Finals 4 game to 0.  The P-Bruins now wait to see who their opponent will be in the Atlantic Division Finals, either the Hartford Wolf Pack or Portland Pirates.

After a scoreless opening period, the Monarchs took a 1-0 advantage at the 14:18 mark of the second period.  David Meckler tallied his first goal of the post-season, while John Zeiler and Oscar Moller recorded the assists.  Manchester grabbed a 2-0 lead with 9.5 seconds left in the period.  Brady Murray netted his first post-season goal with Marc-Andre Cliché and Matt Ryan grabbing the assists.  The Monarchs led 2-0 heading into the second intermission.

In the third period, the P-Bruins cut the Monarchs lead in half at the 5:41.  With a delayed penalty coming, Providence was able to get an extra attacker on the ice.  Sean Curry sent the puck from the point to Matt Hunwick at the left face off circle.  He sent the puck to Pelletier at the other side of the ice and he scored his third goal of the playoffs from the right face off circle.  Providence tied the game at two at the 15:10 mark.  Chris Collins and Nate Thompson worked the puck through the neutral zone.  Thompson sent the puck to Hoggan down the left wing.  He skated into the left face off circle and shot the puck past Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Bernier and into the net for his third goal of the playoffs.  The game went into overtime tied at two.

In overtime, only 46 seconds in, the Monarchs turned the puck over in their own end and the P-Bruins capitalized.  Pelletier took the puck at the right point and sent it to Curry who put a shot towards net.  The puck was brushed aside and went to Karsums who scored his first goal of the post-season.  The P-Bruins went on to the 3-2 victory and a 4 game to 0 series win.

Tuukka Rask stopped 22 of 24 shots for the P-Bruins, while Bernier made 24 saves for the Monarchs.  The P-Bruins went 0-for-4 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.

The P-Bruins continue the 2008 Calder Cup playoffs with the Atlantic Division Finals.  Game dates are still to be determined.  Information on P-Bruins tickets for the 2008 Calder Cup Playoffs can be obtained by calling the team ticket office at (401) 273-5000 or by logging onto the team website at providencebruins.com.
