Bruins-Capitals Preview

Wednesday, 08.06.2014 / 4:47 AM

BRUINS (31-13-2) at CAPITALS (25-19-3)

TV: NESN (HD), CSN-MA

Last 10: Boston 6-3-1; Washington 5-4-1.

Season Series: This is the first of four meetings.

Big Story: The defending Stanley Cup champions are in town not just for a hockey game, but to meet with President Obama at the White House. Tuesday night's game against the Capitals will conclude a three-games-in-four-nights stretch and send the Bruins into the All-Star break.

Team Scope:

Bruins: Faced with back-to-back games over the weekend against the Rangers and Flyers, the Bruins captured three of four points by losing in the waning seconds of OT against the Rangers and winning in a shootout against the Flyers.

"It's good," Lucic said of the Bruins' successful weekend. "Two teams that are on top of the League and the Eastern Conference, two teams that have played well all season. It's great that we were able to get one yesterday and get that shootout win here today. We still want to end on a high note going into Washington on Tuesday."

Capitals: They're coming of an OT loss in Pittsburgh, but there was a lot to like about the way the Caps played. They rallied from a 2-0 deficit and had a 3-2 lead in the third period, but the red-hot Evgeni Malkin scored in OT to keep the Caps from earning the extra point.

Washington will also be without Alex Ovechkin, who received a three-game suspension Monday for his hit on Pens defenseman Zbynek Michalek during the second period.

"Obviously it's a frustrating loss," Michal Neuvirth told the Caps' website, "but I think it was a good game. We battled hard. They got a lucky bounce at the end … it hit the boards and went right on (Malkin's) stick. It was an easy goal for him."

Who's Hot: David Krejci has 1 goal and 4 assists in the Bruins' last four games. … Alex Ovechkin has 2 goals and 3 assists over the Capitals' last five games.

Injury Report: The Bruins enter the game without a serious injury, though they will be without defenseman Andrew Ference due to suspension. …. Washington will be without Nicklas Backstrom (concussion), Mike Green (sports hernia) and Tom Poti (groin).

Stat Pack: The Bruins went 3-1 vs. the Caps last year, with Tim Thomas winning all three games. Tuukka Rask took the only loss against Washington.

Puck Drop: "Our whole team could have been better. (Thomas) was bombarded with shots. There was a lot of traffic. We battled hard and did what we had to do to win." -- Boston coach Claude Julien after the Bruins' 6-5 shootout win in Philadelphia
