THIS WEEK’S NEWS, NOTES AND NUMBERS:
HANDING OUT HARDWARE: On Saturday, April 7 the Boston Bruins will present four awards during the Bruins/Sabres pregame presentation: Eddie Shore Award (exceptional hustle and determination, chosen by the “Gallery Gods”), Elizabeth Dufresne Trophy (outstanding performance during home games, voted by Boston media), John P. Bucyk Award (greatest off-ice charitable contributions, chosen by John Bucyk) and the Bruins Three Stars Award (top performers at home over the course of the season, chosen by 98.5 The Sports Hub).
In addition, the Boston Bruins Foundation and the Boston Chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association (PHWA) will make a $25,000 donation that will be divided and given to the Special Olympics Massachusetts (SOMA) and Raising A Reader Massachusetts.
The Special Olympics Massachusetts (SOMA) provides year-round sports training and athletic competition through a variety of well-coached, Olympic-type sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics Massachusetts also provides athletes with ongoing opportunities to develop physical fitness, prepare for entry into school and community programs, express courage, experience joy, and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics Athletes and the community.
The Raising A Reader Massachusetts mission is to give every child an equal opportunity for achievement by engaging parents from low-income communities in a daily routine of book sharing with their children from birth through age five. The early literacy skills development that Raising A Reader MA promotes is proven to impact school readiness, academic performance and lifetime achievement for children. Raising A Reader MA directly addresses this need, working with over 8,500 children ages 0 through 5 across the Commonwealth and over 200,000 children nationwide.
The Boston Bruins Foundation and the Boston Chapter of the PHWA partnered on a program to raise money for local charities by asking the working media who cover Bruins home games to make a small donation when dining in the Will McDonough Press Room prior to games.
Over the past four seasons, the Foundation collected $75,000 worth of donations through the media meal donation program.
NESN will televise the awards presentation in its entirety.
FAN APPRECIATION DAY: The Bruins will host "Fan Appreciation Day" during the Bruins/Sabres contest at the TD Garden on Saturday, April 7 at 4:00 p.m. ET, in an effort to thank fans for their continued support throughout the 2011-12 season.
Immediately following the game, Bruins players will remain on the ice and throw t-shirts into the stands, then hand 27 fans that were chosen throughout the game the "Shirt off their Backs". Each of these lucky Bruins fans will receive a sealed envelope containing the name of a current Bruins player they will meet that afternoon. After the t-shirt toss, these fans will participate in the on-ice ceremony where they will meet and take home the game-worn autographed jersey of that player.
In addition to winning the "Shirts off their Backs," Bruins fans will enjoy an exciting day of giveaways. Upon arrival, every fan will receive a Bruins team poster courtesy of TD Bank. Throughout the game, Bruins fans will have the opportunity to win a variety of prizes, including a Mohegan Sun VIP Blink 182 Concert Package, which consists of a hotel stay, dinner, two concert tickets and round trip limo service. TD Bank is also giving two lucky sections the Boston Bruins Championship season commemorative book "Full 60 to History: The Inside Story of the 2011 Stanley Cup Champion Boston Bruins." Additional prizes include 2012 playoff tickets, various gift cards and Boston Bruins autographed memorabilia.
SCENARIOS: The Bruins will play either the Ottawa Senators or the Washington Capitals in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs depending on Saturday’s results.
THE BRUINS WILL PLAY THE CAPITALS IF… Ottawa loses in regulation AND Washington wins in either regulation or in overtime/shootout.
THE BRUINS WILL PLAY THE SENATORS IF… Ottawa wins in regulation or loses in overtime/shootout. The Bruins will also face the Sens if Washington loses in regulation or loses in overtime/shootout.
Ottawa visits the New Jersey Devils on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET.
Washington faces off at the Rangers at 6:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.
UPCOMING GAMES: The Bruins will play their last regular season game at home on Saturday, April 7th against the Buffalo Sabres at 4:00 p.m. With their 2-1 loss to Philadelphia on April 5th, the Sabres are out of the playoff picture and finished their season just behind the Washington Capitals at ninth place in the Eastern Conference with 88 points.
The B’s have faced the Sabres five times so far this season and have gone 3-1-1 in those five contests. The Bruins won both home games played at the Garden on November 11th and February 8th.
Following Saturday’s last regular season games, the NHL will compile a playoff schedule to be released on Sunday, April 8.
Jack Edwards, Andy Brickley and Naoko Funayama will call Saturday’s game against the Sabres while the tandem of Dave Goucher and Bob Beers will handle the radio duties on 98.5 The Sports Hub. The start time for the upcoming game is as follows:
4/7 vs. BUF, 4:00 p.m. ET
124 AND COUNTING: Including the Bruins latest home game the Bruins have now sold out their last 124 home games at the TD Garden, including regular season and playoffs. This sellout streak began more than two years ago on December 5, 2009 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The last game the Bruins did not have 17,565 in attendance at the Garden was on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 when they hosted the Tampa Bay Lightning (16,553).
SEGUIN SHOW: Tyler Seguin
heads into tomorrow's season finale vs. Buffalo as the club's leading scorer and if he maintains that lead he will become the youngest player in team history to win the Bruins' scoring race at 20 years, 2 months and 7 days.
Five previous players have led the Boston scoring parade as 20-year-olds and he would join (youngest to oldest):
- Patrice Bergeron
(20 years, 8 months, 22 days) in 2005-06
- Paul Ronty (20 years, 9 months, 23 days) in 1948-49 (shared)
- Joe Thornton (20 years, 10 months, 7 days) in 1999-2000
- Don McKenney (20 years, 10 months, 20 days) in 1954-55 (shared)
- Don Gallinger (20 years, 11 months, 1 day) in 1945-46
Seguin has 65 points on the season, three ahead of David Krejci
FACEOFF LEADERS: Patrice Bergeron
could finish the regular season with the league’s highest faceoff percentage. He is currently tied with Chicago’s Jonathan Toews with a 59.4% success rate entering the final day of the regular season. He leads the NHL in faceoffs won with 963 and ranks fourth overall in faceoffs taken with 1621.
100: The Bruins secured their 100th point of the season during their win over Ottawa on Thursday. This marks the 20th time in team history the Bruins have reached the 100 point plateau.
BOSTON MEDIA TWEET OF THE WEEK (TOTW): Some solid entries this week but TheBruinsBlog emerges as the victor for his 5th win of the season, tying GlobeFluto for the overall lead. There were multiple plays on “Khudobin” but the TOTW voting committee deemed TheBruinsBlog’s the best.
