Chiarelli Notebook: Arnesson, Blidh Impress at Development Camp

BostonBruins.com - While David Pastrnak certainly stood out among the group at Bruins Development Camp, General Manager Peter Chiarelli was also impressed by the strong camps from Sweden natives Anton Blidh and Linus Arnesson.

Both were drafted by the Bruins in 2013, and came into their second camp looking much stronger and much more comfortable.

"You know, I thought Blidh had a strong camp, I thought Arnesson had a strong camp," Chiarelli said, while discussing his impressions on the final day of on-ice sessions at Ristuccia Arena.

Arnesson, a mobile, two-way defenseman, signed his entry-level deal with the team on June 1 after being the team's first 2013 draft pick (second round, 60th overall). It came as a bit of a surprise for Arnesson, but was a testament to his development.

The blueliner is set to attend Boston's training camp before playing the 2014-15 season with Djurgarden in the Swedish Hockey League.

Blidh, an aggressive, high-energy winger, was a sixth round pick (180th overall) for the Bruins in 2013, and came into camp a much more mature, physical player with added strength.

He's strong on the puck, forechecks hard and has proven himself to be a responsible player, getting tasked with penalty killing duties. In Boston's system, he has plenty of time to develop playing for Frolunda in the SHL.

Blidh already has some 'Bruin' built into him, and could progress into a player like Daniel Paille, or P.J. Axelsson, who finished out his pro career with Frolunda.

Getting a Deal Done with Bartkowski

Aside from development camp evaluations, GM Peter Chiarelli spent time during the media availability answering questions from reporters about the current state of the Bruins' roster.

Out of the club's group of restricted free agents that need to be re-signed, only defenseman Matt Bartkowski filed for arbitration. He and the team can continue to negotiate up until the date of his hearing, in hopes of avoiding the arbitration process.

"I think we will [sign him before arbitration], yeah," said Chiarelli. "The same still stands about the nine defensemen, so I still have a little bit of work to do. But with regards to Bart, yeah I think we’ll get a deal done. There’s just been so much stuff going on, we’re getting to that stuff shortly."

The Bruins are also set to sign entry-level free agents Reilly Smith and Torey Krug at some point this summer. The team has exclusive negotiating rights with them.

Working on Extensions

In addition to inking the RFAs, the Bruins could have their sights set on getting extensions done with the likes of Johnny Boychuk or David Krejci. Last summer, Patrice Bergeron and Tuukka Rask signed long-term extensions before entering the final year of their contracts, while Dennis Seidenberg signed an extension with the team in the Fall.

"I’m not going to go into details as to our negotiations. I can say that we will try and get guys done," said Chiarelli. "I try and be proactive and we’re working on a couple things right now."

Dog Days of Summer

After the frenzy of free agency's opening and the deals being made around that time, the market has died down for the League's general managers, likely until training camp draws closer.

"There's stuff going on, it's just not fast," said Chiarelli. "There's parameters of deals talked about and it's just kind of pushing it along slowly. There's no urgency. It may happen that it happens on the eve of training camp or two days before, because the player has to get to that camp from where he is. But it's slow, it's slow."
