New Practice Facility in the Works for Bruins

BostonBruins.com - The Spoked-B will have a new practice home starting in the Fall of 2016, a little bit closer to home.

The Bruins announced on Tuesday that they have signed a letter of intent for a long-term lease with the Boston Landing development in the Allston-Brighton neighborhood of Boston to build the new rink.

The facility will include approximately 25,000 square feet of dedicated locker room, training and office space. Construction is estimated to begin in the Spring of 2015.

The Bruins have practiced out of Ristuccia Memorial Arena in Wilmington, Mass. since the 1987-88 season.

While Boston's ownership and front office were certainly excited to announce the new plans, Boston Mayor (and Bruins' fan) Marty Walsh was thrilled to hear the news.

"The Bruins have made Boston proud with an incredible legacy of perseverance, spirit and heart, and we're excited that they have returned here and will be investing in Boston through this new development and plans for an impressive practice facility in Brighton," said Mayor Walsh. "I'd like to welcome the Bruins back to the neighborhood."

The Boston Landing project consists of a 14-acre mixed-use development that will include the world headquarters of New Balance, a new commuter rail station, hotel, retail and restaurant space, along with the Bruins' new sports complex.

At nearly every press conference to begin and end the Bruins' seasons, Principal Charlie Jacobs has been asked about plans for a new practice facility. That didn't change at the end of the 2013-14 season.

"Interesting you bring it up, because we just had a meeting about our practice facility and a couple of different options. Best that I keep where we’re at right now a little close to the vest and say that we are moving along," Jacobs had said back in May, during his season-ending presser. "We're pursuing two distinct possibilities, both within 15 miles of the rink here."

The Bruins have settled on their new home, and it's now only two seasons away from being a reality.

“I am thrilled that we have found the Bruins a new practice home within the Boston city limits,” Jacobs said in the Bruins' official announcement. “Our goal is to set the industry standard in everything that we do, and we are confident that our new practice facility will do just that. As we enter the design phase of the project, we look forward to sharing details as they become available.”

“Since joining the Bruins in a front office capacity, a goal of mine has been to move the Bruins into a first-class practice facility and this agreement moves us closer to accomplishing that goal,” said President Cam Neely.

“The vision that New Balance has for the Boston Landing project is exactly what we were looking for, and we are confident that through this partnership, we will build a facility that our entire organization will be proud of.”

Elkus Manfredi Architects will provide the design for the complex and John Moriarty & Associates will handle the construction.
