Daniel Paille Out with Concussion-Like Symptoms; Loui Eriksson Update

WILMINGTON, MA - Bruins forward Daniel Paille flew back to Boston with an undisclosed upper-body injury last week, leaving the team in Calgary amidst their road trip through Canada.

Following the Bruins' skate at their practice rink, Ristuccia Arena, on Monday, Head Coach Claude Julien gave an update on the forward, who was again missing from the ice.

"Dan came to us the first time in Calgary and started talking about not feeling well and once he got evaluated by our trainers, it looked like concussion symptoms so we sent him back home to get evaluated by our doctors," said Julien.

"It was an unfortunate thing; it was a thing we found out at the last minute and so we scrambled there to get another player back, but the first we did was send him home and made sure he was well taken care of."

Paille played against Toronto and took part in practice on Monday in Calgary. Julien informed reporters on Tuesday following the team's pregame skate at the Saddeldome that Paille headed back to Boston for evaluation by team doctors.

As a result, the Bruins recalled forward Nick Johnson from the Providence Bruins. He remains in the lineup, with Paille out.

Eriksson's Recovery

There haven't been many updates on Loui Eriksson, on injured reserve since suffering a concussion against Pittsburgh on December 7, because the Bruins have been giving him space while he recovers.

It's been nine days since the injury. When Julien was asked about the winger's progression following the team's Monday practice, he admitted there wasn't much new on his recovery.

"He hasn’t even come to the rink so I guess that’s probably the only thing that I can give you right now, which is not a good sign," said Juilen.

The concussion marked Eriksson's second within 45 days, as he sustained the first one of his NHL career on October 23 in Buffalo.

The first time around, he passed the exertion test and was able to return to working out about 8-9 days after sustaining his first concussion, and he was able to begin skating 10 days after the injury, when he joined the Bruins for a light skate before they faced the Islanders. His first game back in action came on November 5 against Dallas.

He's now missed nine games this season to concussion.

Patrice Bergeron reached out to Eriksson via text message the night he sustained his second concussion. Eriksson reached out the next morning.

"He obviously mentioned some stuff about not feeling great," Bergeron had said on December 8 in Toronto. "But it’s still early, so hopefully he takes his time and it’s going to go away soon. It’s unfortunate, especially since he’s obviously a great player for us and a huge addition so it’s another situation where we all need to step up."

It's tough to put any timetables on concussions, so updates on his progress may come off and on.

"It’s his second concussion here in two months," Julien had cautioned. "And I think, a little bit of sensitivity there on our part."
