Bergeron, Campbell Expect to Play in Preseason
BostonBruins.com - Once the squad traveling to Baltimore had left Ristuccia Arena on Tuesday, and a group of skaters had started to filter off the ice, there were Patrice Bergeron and Gregory Campbell, going hard with 1-on-1 battles against each other in the corners.

Neither Bruin traveled with their respective groups to Montreal and Baltimore for the B's first two preseason games, taking the more cautious route to make sure they're 100 percent ready to get into battle against opponents.

So there they were - pushing, shoving, trying to protect the puck, stickhandling, jabbing, battling with each other. All to get both of them ready to take the next step in their recoveries: game action.

"We figured if we stayed on long enough, you might leave," Bergeron laughed to a handful of reporters once he and Campbell finished up and met with media in the locker room.

Smiles and good spirits for the duo aside, here are two quotes from Bergeron and Campbell that are certainly positive moving forward.

"I expect I’ll play, I’m going to have to talk to [trainers and Coach] when that will happen," said an optimistic Bergeron who's been feeling good.

A few minutes later, when I traveled a few stalls down to talk with Campbell, he mirrored the same confidence.

"To be honest, I think I'm ready to play," he said. (And he could play, as soon as Thursday night against Detroit at TD Garden.)

The two have been lucky, in a sense, to have each other as they battle back from their Stanley Cup playoff injuries.

"It's nice to have someone as competitive as Bergy to test me," said Campbell. "We were agreeing that you can work as hard as you can off the ice but once you translate to ton the ice, you still feel like you're a step behind."

"We're both kind of cut from the same cloth as far as the standards that we have of ourselves and the level of conditioning that we want to be at."

For Campbell, his next step is the mental aspect of feeling like he's fully conditioned and ready to go in game action with the battling.

For Bergeron, the process is still in regards to the physical pain he feels when testing himself in battles. Any discomfort he still has around his rib doesn't affect him, but again, like Campbell, he holds himself to high standards in terms of being absolutely ready to go.

"It's more the battles, and knowing that I’m not going to feel too much," said Bergeron. "I still feel a little bit when I battle, and now it’s about knowing and talking with the trainers if it’s just normal and I’m going to have to go through that for another month or so, or if it’s just still not a good idea to get in the game."

"So it’s just about knowing what that little pain is right now so I’m just managing that and going from there."

"We’re not pushing it too fast," he added. "I feel pretty good, I feel like I’m close to getting ready to playing games, and obviously like I said before, playing games is always the answer you need and that’s the only way you can feel better, feel more comfortable - in your game shape."

"The game is always the last and final answer, but you need some games to feel better so hopefully it’s going to be soon."
