Subban vs. Subban

BostonBruins.com - On June 23, 2012, Malcolm Subban heard his named called, 24th overall, by the Boston Bruins, in the NHL Draft.

A few minutes later, there was P.K. Subban, in the Bruins' suite, supporting his younger brother on his big day.

From that moment on, we knew this day would come - tonight at the Bell Centre - when Malcolm will face P.K. in their first match-up against one another. When not just the stories Bruins-Habs rivalry, but also the brotherly rivalry in full force.

It marks the Bruins' first exhibition game of 2013-14, and Malcolm Subban's preseason debut in Black & Gold. He's suited up in the spoked-B for rookie games, and throughout development camps, but this will be an experience like none other.

And mom and dad will be in the arena, taking it all in.

"It’ll be a great experience and I’m looking forward to it, I’m just trying to focus on the whole game in general and not too much on that," said Malcolm, following the B's on-ice session back near Boston before making the brief trip to Montreal.

"That's for you guys to worry about," he joked to a handful of reporters. "I'll just focus on the game and playing tonight."

"There’s no better preseason place to play your first game than Montreal. It’s going to be huge and I’m going to be ready for it."

So, were there any jabs and texts back and forth?

Malcolm said there hadn't been too much of that; no wagering, no texts yet today.

“I sent him a text message yesterday but he hasn’t answered. [I] think he’s giving me the cold shoulder,” Subban joked to MontrealCanadiens.com prior to the match-up.

While many know that outwardly confident side of P.K., Malcolm is on the quieter side, trying to block out all of the attention being focused on the 19-year-old in the "Subban vs. Subban" match-up we've all been waiting for.

"He's definitely a little bit different but for us, he seems like a quiet guy and kind of a little bit more relaxed than his brother," said Daniel Paille, of the young netminder. "He's definitely confident in net and it's good to bring that into the game."

Malcolm, though, has the benefit of being surrounded by Boston veterans like Paille, and other rookies to turn to, like Ryan Spooner, to calm his nerves.

That is, of course, if the calm and collected Subban even has too many nerves.

"I wouldn't say I'm nervous, but just can't wait to get on the ice," said Subban. "I'm sure they'll come when I get on the ice, but I'll just focus in and play my game."

Spooner played his first NHL game in Montreal, and told me prior to the match-up that he was surprised at how calm Malcolm seemed. A keen quality for a netminder.

"Obviously it’s going to get me worked up for the game," said Subban, of getting to face the faster-paced type of game for the first time, as he makes the jump to the pros this season. "Hopefully I can handle it and we’ll see what happens."

And if it goes to a shootout, and he faces P.K., will he have his moves memorized?

"That screws you up as a goalie, if you’re thinking," said Malcolm. "It’s better to have a clear mind and just try to read him, so that’s what I would do."

Oh, I'd say he's ready. Now it's just about earning the bragging rights.
